Personality sketch - Aravind Malagatti
Dr Aravind Malagatti is widely known as the indian writer who writes in kannada. He has made a reputation for himself through critique, research and creative writing. Although he ventured into literature with poetry, he also spread his wings into stories, dramas, novels, travel literature and also an autobiography. At present, he has written more than 30 books, among which more than 60 are sole authored. Many of his works have been translated into english and other regional languages. Ph.D. and M.Phil works on Prof. Malagatti’s literature have been submitted in kannada and english languages. Academicians and Critics have wrote more than 15 books about him and his work. ‘Government Brahmana’, the autobiography which bagged the sahitya academy award and has been adapted onto popular cinema is also the first kannada dalit autobiography. Apart from these, the Honoray Award of Karnataka sahitya academy was conferred on him for his total contribution to Kannada literature (2002). He served as a president of Karnataka sahitya academy (2017-2019) and mamber of central sahitya academy New Delhi (2013-2016). The socisl aspects of Dalits arehisarea of concern. In fact heis identified as `Dalitajna' Some have called him as the propounder of Kannada Dalit literature.
Aravind Malagatti was born in Muddebihal, Bijapur. He won the gold medal for his PhD thesis in 1987 from karnataka University. He started his teaching career in Mangalore Government College. He was appointed as the reader in Mangalore University and later became HOD for Kannada department as well. Aravind Malagatti joined Mysore University as a professor in Kuvempu Kannada Adhyana Samsthe. Aravind Malagatti has also served as the director of Kuvempu Kannada Adhyayana Samsthe, Director of Prasaranga (publishing wing of the university), and Director of Foklore museum at different times. While serving as the director of Kuvempu studies, he brought out the last volume of the significant and challenging Kannada Vishwakosha thus was responsible for the completion of the entire project. Then he converted all 15 volumes into tech-savvy CD format, making the encyclopedia available in multiple platforms. He restarted the karnataka vishwakosha project which was left uncompleted and brought out three editions. He also formed the Honnakogile project and brought 6 volumes of kannada literature.Asthe name of Beyond Frames Historyof Kannada Literature.
